Taking Exams on Your Computer

Students are permitted to type their exams, unless otherwise notified, on their own personal PC or Mac computers. Please note that you must use your own computer for your exams. The Law School's loaner PCs will not be available for exams.

In order to take any in-class exam, whether scheduled or during a Free Slot, on your laptop computer, you must download and register SofTest. SofTest is an exam security program used by the Law School. SofTest allows you to type your exam answers while restricting your ability to access other programs and/or files on your computer, such as email, word documents and the internet. SofTest also enables you to upload your exam answer to a secure web server through a wireless internet connection. Please follow the applicable links below for instructions on preparing your computer for use during exams and general information regarding Free Slot and Deferred Exams.

Taking Free Slot and Deferred Exams on Your Computer

During Free Slots, students are bound by the Law School's Code of Student Conduct, as with any other exam.

  1. Go to Exam Central at least 20 minutes before the start of the Free Slot to pick up your exam. Write your Exam Number on the exam.
  2. Once you have your exam, go to the designated Free Slot room and sit in the appropriate section for your exam (open book or closed book). Feel free to set up in the Free Slot room before going to Exam Central to pick up your exam.
  3. Go through the SofTest Launch and wait at the Stop Sign(s) until told to start.
  4. When told to begin the exam, hit Begin on SofTest and open your exam. Start your work and keep track of your own time.
  5. When the time for your exam is up, stop working, hit Exit and Save. Immediately take your exam questions to the Submission Table outside the Free Slot room and have them time stamped as turned in. Hand in your exam questions. Note - you have FIVE MINUTES of "travel time" in addition to the allotted time of your exam, as stated in the instructions, to time stamp and hand in your questions. Taking more than the allotted time plus the five minute "travel time," known as a "late clock," will result in a lowering of your grade. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR TIME AND WHEN THE EXAM SHOULD BE RETURNED.
  6. Please be quiet while going through these steps and leaving the room, as students in the same room will end exams at varying times.
  7. After time stamping and handing in your questions, quietly return to the examination room to check the process of your answer upload. If your answer has successfully uploaded, you may leave. If it has not, immediately inform the technical proctor.
