LL.M. in Taxation

Each year, new and experienced lawyers choose the Graduate Tax Program at Temple University Beasley School of Law to deepen their understanding of complex taxation issues. Since 1973, the internationally renowned Tax Program has offered a Master of Laws in Taxation that provides candidates with a strong foundation in tax law as well as an opportunity to develop expertise beyond the level of study offered in J.D. programs. In addition, the program offers certificate programs in Estate Planning and in the Taxation of Employee Benefits. These certificate programs allow students to gain expertise in specific areas of interest without having to complete all of the LL.M. requirements.

The Graduate Tax program at Temple gives the students a leg up, says attorney Joseph Sedlack. "Sure, you can learn on the job, but Temple's program will give you practical experience and a broad view of lots of areas of tax law." Sedlack, who is a partner at Reed Smith in Philadelphia, has been an adjunct professor at Temple since 1985. "I like the interaction with the students. I end up seeing graduates of the program in practice. We keep in touch."

A Message from the Director

Thank you for your interest in the Graduate Tax Program at Temple University Beasley School of Law. We offer our students a broad-based rigorous curriculum, taught by highly qualified full-time and adjunct faculty.

At Temple, we are committed to providing "real law" training. We work hard to prepare our students for practice, and our programs are affordable and flexible. Students can complete the LL.M. in Taxation on either a full-time or part-time basis during the day or evening. Our certificate programs in Estate Planning and Employee Benefits allow students to master an area of expertise in two to four semesters of evening study.

Our full-time tax faculty members are outstanding scholar-teachers and have earned Temple a national reputation for excellence in the teaching of tax law. Our adjunct faculty members are expert in their areas of practice and come from private law firms, industry, the Internal Revenue Service, and accounting firms.

Our students bring a breadth of experience to our programs. Some come to us straight from J.D. programs. Others are new or mid-career lawyers looking to hone their skills or explore new areas of interest. Our small classes encourage participation and allow our faculty to give each student personal attention.

The law school provides educational opportunities outside the classroom as well. Graduate tax students are welcome to participate in the IRS internship program, as well as the School's wide array of informal learning and volunteer opportunities.

LL.M. in Taxation

An LLM degree candidate must satisfactorily complete 24 credit hours of course work (including the 12 credit curriculum requirements listed below and a writing seminar) and maintain a 2.5 cumulative average to obtain the Master of Laws in Taxation. Course work must be completed within four years of initial enrollment.

Required Courses:

Corporate Taxation (3 credit hours)
Partnership Taxation (3 credit hours)
Estate and Gift Taxation (3 credit hours)
Taxation II (3 credit hours)


Joint J.D/LL.M. Program

Temple Law School offers Temple J.D. students the unique opportunity to earn both a J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation with as little as one semester of study beyond the J.D. requirements. Students pay no additional tuition for LL.M. courses taken while in the J.D. program.

A J.D./LL.M. student can complete up to 12 of the 24 credits required for the LL.M. while still enrolled in the J.D. program. Temple J.D. students should apply before graduation to be considered part of the J.D./LL.M. program.
