Temple University Beasley School of Law is pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Tax Law and Public Policy, with Professor Alice Abreu as its inaugural Director. The Center serves as a hub for all of Temple’s tax related activities, and will make it easier for students to take full advantage of everything Temple offers those interested in a career in Tax, including its Graduate Tax Program.

“The tax faculty, under the tireless leadership of Professor Abreu, has built a program of extraordinary depth and breadth,” said Dean Gregory Mandel. “The Center for Tax Law and Public Policy both reflects their record of excellence and affirms our institutional commitment to tax education and scholarship.”

Professor Abreu shares leadership responsibilities for the Tax Center with Professor Andrew Weiner, Director of the Graduate Tax Program, who joined the faculty in 2019 after an impressive career with the Department of Justice as a tax litigator. In announcing Professor Weiner’s 2019 appointment, Professor Abreu expressed delight at his arrival, observing that “his depth of knowledge, meticulous nature, and student-focused approach make him a perfect fit to lead the Graduate Tax program to new heights.” Additional tax faculty include Professor Robert Bartow, Professor Nancy J. Knauer, Professor Kathy Mandelbaum, and Professor Andrea Monroe.

Temple’s nationally ranked tax program features a robust curriculum, beginning with the opportunity for day students to take Tax in the spring of their 1L year. The curriculum includes courses like the Tax Policy Colloquium, an innovative weekend-long deep dive into tax policy led by Eric Solomon and Hank Gutman; International Tax, co-taught by Professor Abreu and Joan Arnold, Chair-Elect of the ABA Section on Taxation; and Professor Abreu’s ground-breaking Low Income Taxpayer Policy and Practice, which includes certification and service preparing tax returns for low income taxpayers through the IRS’s VITA program combined with an examination of tax policy scholarship. Temple also invites leading tax experts to deliver the annual Fogel Lecture, which in November 2019 featured Chief Judge Maurice Foley of the US Tax Court.

“For many years, we have been encouraging students, faculty, and practitioners alike to ‘think Temple for Tax,’” remarked Professor Abreu. “With the launch of our Center for Tax Law and Public Policy, we are positioned to do much more than think; we are now focused on preparing the next generation of lawyers for leadership in tax policy both here and around the world.”
